9 Wins - 21 Losses, 0 - 15 ON THE ROAD

MISSION COMPLETE, END OF AN ERROR.

UAB FANS DESERVE BETTER
We love UAB. We protested, donated and remained resiliant to bring this program back. We wear green and gold with pride. Because we care, we’re asking for accountability and a course correction.

Why We’re Speaking Up

This isn’t personal. It’s about honoring the work of UAB players, alumni, and coaches who built a winning tradition—and insisting that the program’s direction reflects that legacy. The current trajectory under Trent Dilfer does not meet the standard our community expects or deserves.

Dilfer was hired from the high school ranks—with no college or professional coaching experience—and granted a buyout on par with proven coaches. Three seasons in, the on-field results, road performance, and conference record raise serious concerns.

The Receipts: Performance Under Trent Dilfer

  • Background: Hired from the high school ranks; no prior college or professional coaching.
  • Contract: A buyout structured similarly to deals given to proven head coaches.
  • 2023: 4–8 overall, with 7 double-digit losses.
  • 2024: 3–9 overall, including 7 double-digit losses.
  • 2025 (to date): 2–4, with narrow wins over FCS Alabama State and a subpar Akron. All 4 losses have been by double digits. The toughest stretch of the schedule still lies ahead.
  • Blowouts: 12 of the 21 losses have been by 20 points or more.
  • Road Record: 0–15 on the road.
  • Conference Record: 5–14 in conference play.

Numbers don’t tell the whole story—but they do show a clear trend. In this case, the trend is moving in the wrong direction.

Remember the Standard: Recent UAB Benchmarks

2022 (Interim HC Bryant Vincent)

  • Only one double-digit loss—and it was to SEC powerhouse LSU.
  • Bowl win to close the season.

Bill Clark Era (6 seasons)

  • 5 winning seasons.
  • 6 non-losing seasons (no losing records).
  • 5 bowl invites with 2 bowl wins.
  • 3 conference championship game appearances, with 2 championships won.

That is the UAB standard: resilient, competitive, and postseason-relevant. We’re not asking for perfection. We’re asking for a return to consistent competitiveness and a clear upward trajectory.

What’s Not Working

  • Road Futility: An 0–15 road mark is not just a slump—it’s a persistent pattern that impacts fan travel, recruiting perception, and postseason positioning.
  • Conference Struggles: A 5–14 league record puts UAB behind peers we expect to challenge and beat.
  • Margin of Defeat: The frequency of double-digit losses (especially in 2024) signals issues with game plans, adjustments, depth, or all three.
  • Quality of Wins: In 2025, the narrow victories came against FCS Alabama State and a subpar Akron—not the kind of résumé-builders that indicate progress.

These aren’t isolated data points—they form a consistent picture. Without clear and immediate change, the toughest remaining schedule only magnifies the risk of a backslide.

Why Accountability Matters

UAB Football is more than a record; it’s the pride of Birmingham, a beacon for student-athletes, and a unifying force for alumni. When leadership decisions don’t produce results, the impact is felt everywhere:

  • Recruiting: Top prospects notice instability and lopsided losses.
  • Player Development: Blowouts and inconsistent play hamper growth and confidence.
  • Fan Morale: Road futility and conference struggles erode trust and enthusiasm.
  • Donor Confidence: Investment follows a credible plan, consistent culture, and tangible improvement.
  • Program Brand: The mark of UAB should be discipline, toughness, and resilience, home and away.

Accountability isn’t harsh—it’s respectful. It honors the work of those who built a winning culture and protects the trajectory of those who will inherit it.
